Ransomware payments dropped by 35% in 2024, totaling $813.55 million—a significant decrease from the $1.25 billion recorded in 2023. This decline is attributed to improved cybersecurity measures and law enforcement crackdowns on major ransomware groups.
Despite this positive trend, ransomware attacks remain prevalent, with threat actors shifting tactics toward data exfiltration and extortion. The number of incidents reported on dark-web leak sites reached record highs, indicating that cybercriminals are still actively targeting businesses.
Experts stress that organizations must remain proactive by strengthening security postures, implementing incident response plans, and maintaining robust backup strategies to minimize ransomware risks.
